FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 16-year-old student at Whiddon-Rogers Education Center in Fort Lauderdale was taken into custody this past Thursday after police say he struck a school security staff member during a disturbance in the cafeteria.
According to Fort Lauderdale police, a school resource officer responded to the incident around 1:05 p.m. at the school, located at 700 SW 26th St.
Investigators said an argument began between two students and escalated as school security attempted to intervene.
Police said one of the students, Tyaun Robertson, wrestled with security personnel and allegedly struck a staff member.
They said Robertson was taken into custody without further incident and charged with one felony count of battery on a school official. He was then transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
A spokesperson with Broward County Public Schools said the teacher was struck in the leg while trying to prevent the students from fighting. School officials also confirmed that the teacher was not injured and the situation was quickly contained.
“The student responsible is receiving appropriate consequences,” the district said in a statement sent to Local 10 News on Monday.
No other details were immediately released.
