MONROE COUNTY, Fla. — Great white sharks are starting their annual migration south, drawn to the warmer waters off South Florida.

A 12-foot, 1,000-pound female juvenile named “Ernst” was detected off the Lower Keys Wednesday morning, according to the shark-tagging organization OCEARCH.

Ernst, a fast swimmer, was tagged and released last month in Nova Scotia, Canada.

In just 39 days, the shark traveled more than 2,000 miles to reach her current location in the Keys.
