MONROE COUNTY, Fla. — The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scammers posing as banks or financial organizations, calling or texting to steal account information.
The thieves often claim an account needs to be “de-activated” for a fake reason and ask victims to provide passwords or the word “cancel.”
Authorities emphasize: do not comply.
“Never give your password to anyone,” the sheriff’s office said.
Residents who receive suspicious calls or messages about their bank or financial accounts should contact their bank directly.
Officials said scams may also involve requests for payment via gift cards or cryptocurrency. If a family member or friend claims to need money urgently, verify the request before sending funds and report the message to the sheriff’s office.
