District employees jailed for using Broward school facilities for personal gain, cops say

Suspects are accused of using school gym for private sports tournament, charging attendees and pocketing cash

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Two Broward County Public Schools employees who were arrested for fraud went before a judge on Thursday.

Deputies said Henry McNabb, 42, of Deerfield Beach, and Brenton Hankerson, 43, of North Lauderdale, were using the district’s facilities without authorization and for his own personal gain.

This all came to light back in May when McNabb had a run-in with Delvin King, a principal at the Youth Under Construction school in Pompano Beach.

King organized his school graduation inside the Blanche Ely High School basketball gymnasium, but when he arrived, there was already another event going on.

“I came in and there was a whole basketball tournament going on here at Blanche Ely High School,” said King. “There was nothing on the calendar. I am the only person (who) rented the gym.”

King believes McNabb and others have been using Broward school gymnasiums to hold athletic events without properly requesting the facilities through the district and charging people to attend.

“They are illegally renting out the gym for personal financial gain,” said King.

It’s something that King says could prove to be a major liability for the district if something went wrong on school grounds.

“There were no employees there,” said King. “No security, no custodians, not one Broward County school employee.”

Local 10 News reached out to Broward Schools, which provided the following statement:

“Both employees in question were arrested by Broward Schools Police as part of an investigations into the improper use of district facilities for personal gain. The Superintendent maintains a zero-tolerance stance on public corruption, and both employees will be subject to termination.”

Officials said that McNabb alone has deprived the district of nearly $13,000 in potential revenue.

Both suspects remain behind bars at the Broward Main Jail on a $15,000 bond.
