DAVIE, Fla. — South Florida residents are reporting an increase in immigration enforcement activity across Davie in recent days, sharing cell phone videos with Local 10 News that show Florida Highway Patrol troopers, masked officers and U.S. Border Patrol agents conducting operations near major roadways and nurseries.
“It just seems like every time the activity is a bit more heightened,” one viewer said.
Videos show enforcement presence from Davie and Griffin Road to Nob Hill Road and Interstate 595, as well as along State Road 84 near Southwest 136th Avenue. Residents say authorities appear to be targeting large work vehicles.
“State troopers pulling over landscaping vehicles,” one resident said.
“I’ve had my daughter ask me if there’s any probability of her being stopped as she’s walking home from school … born, raised,” said a resident. “We’re concerned of being racially profiled.”
Concerns are also growing beyond Davie. In Hialeah, attorneys tell Local 10 News that immigration enforcement has intensified at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services offices.
They say a rising number of legal residents seeking to become U.S. citizens are being pulled from naturalization ceremonies.
Attorneys say most of the legal immigrants affected by the pause in South Florida are from Cuba, Venezuela and Haiti.
Officials have increased scrutiny on people seeking asylum or U.S. citizenship following the recent shooting of two National Guardsmen in Washington, D.C., one of whom was killed by an immigrant from Afghanistan.
