According to Miami police, beginning at about 5 a.m., the MPD and FBI began making arrests across the city and county.

This was the second wave of Operation EL PRIMO, “a long-term joint investigation that dismantled a sophisticated cocaine trafficking organization operating primarily in the Flagami neighborhood, as well as the Little Havana and Coral Way areas,” Miami police said.

According to police, about 20 people who have been named in recent federal indictments were taken into custody, some of whom are said to be connected to a murder-for-hire plot that was disrupted before it could be carried out.

“This takedown sends a clear and unmistakable message: drug trafficking and the violence that follows it will not be tolerated in Miami,” Chief of Police Manuel A. Morales said in a statement. “I am extremely proud of our narcotics detectives from the Special Investigations Section and grateful for the hundreds of hours of tireless, often undercover work that led to today’s safe and successful operation. Their dedication, combined with outstanding collaboration with our partners at the FBI, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, and State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle and her team at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, made these results possible. Together, we will continue to dismantle criminal organizations, remove dangerous offenders from our streets, and protect the people of Miami.”

According to police, Tuesday’s arrests also led to the seizure of more than 22 kilograms of cocaine, more than $120,000 in cash, guns and ammunition.
