MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A Burmese python that had caused concern among residents in a Miami-Dade neighborhood was captured Wednesday after being spotted again following an initial sighting during Thanksgiving.
A resident out for a walk near near 133rd Street and 112nd Avenue in Kendall, located the snake, and contacted Humane Iguana Control, which responded quickly and removed the python before it could move to another area.
Michael Ronquillo, President of Humane Iguana Control, told Local 10 that he found the snake hiding in an areca palm plant.
He said removing invasive Burmese pythons is important to protect pets and reduce anxiety among residents. He added that the timing of the capture was fortunate, with the holiday season approaching because “no one wants a python surprise on Christmas morning.”
Officials advise residents who encounter a python to contact trained professionals rather than attempting to handle the animal themselves, citing the risk of injury.
