Much-needed relief supplies heading for Jamaica ahead of Christmas holiday

Relief supplies bound for Jamaica as recovery from Hurricane Melissa continues

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Four 53-foot tractor trailers, along with a packed airplane hangar at Pompano Beach Airpark, are loaded with life-saving supplies, ready to be delivered to the victims of Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica.

“It’s just under 80,000 pounds at the moment and those four containers right now, we still have some more supplies in the hangar,” said Del Rojas.

The containers were stocked with help from Project Dynamo, Ruff Rescue Transport and the Everything Lifesaving Foundation.

“Well, there’s still a huge need because it’s still extensively damaged,” said Rojas.

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on Oct. 28 as one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record. At least 45 people were killed.

Now, volunteers are targeting the hardest hit communities, including Montego Bay and Black River.

“The hospitals really, that’s a big focus, is getting those rebuilt, getting them the supplies,” said Paul Herrera with Everything Lifesaving. “So we’re in this for the long term.”

More relief is on the way as Jamaica prepares for its first Christmas after the hurricane.

“The relief has brought together a lot of people,” said Rojas. “And it’s very nice to see people work together.”
