OAKLAND PARK, Fla. — Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies on Thursday announced a 37-year-old man’s arrest after a pregnant woman was stabbed to death at an Oakland Park apartment complex earlier this week.
The stabbing was reported around 12:55 a.m. on Tuesday at a first-floor apartment at near the 100 block of Northewast 41st Street, according to BSO.
Deputies reported there was a struggle with Mario Alejandro Ramirez, who they identified as the murder suspect, as they attempted to apply “pressure to stop his bleeding” from what appeared to be “a self-inflicted injury.”
Oakland Park Fire Rescue personnel pronounced the woman dead and took Ramirez to the Broward Health Medical Center.
Neighbors described the victim as a pregnant mother who lived in the apartment with her children.
A neighbor said that before the family’s tragedy, they had heard noises related to the couple’s domestic violence coming from the apartment.
Deputies had yet to confirm if the man and the woman were a couple and if they had a history of domestic violence.
“It sounded like furniture, like hitting, and there was a lot of screaming,” a neighbor told Local 10 on Tuesday.
There was blood splattered on a window. Deputies and the medical examiner’s office used a blue plastic tarp to cover the woman’s body.
Jail records show Ramirez is facing one count of a charge of murder, described as dangerous and depraved, without premeditation.
He is being held without bond at the Broward Main Jail as of Friday morning. Local 10 has reached out to BSO to find out if more charges are pending.
