MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A man has been arrested after police said he confessed to shooting his girlfriend of three years, leaving her in critical condition Friday morning near West Miami.

It happened around 10:30 a.m. in the 6700 block of Southwest 13th Terrace in unincorporated Coral Terrace area, just outside of the West Miami city limits.

Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said the victim and her boyfriend, 31-year-old Giovanni Javier Echevarria, were laying down together in his bedroom when they started arguing and it became physical.

They said shortly after, Echevarria grabbed a gun and shot the victim in the chest.

The victim was able to call 911 where she stated “he shot me in the chest,” according to the report. “We were in an argument but not like that.”

Deputies said the victim sustained a gunshot wound to her chest and left buttock.

They said the victim was transported to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital in critical, but stable condition. She was then intubated and placed in intensive care.

After being brought in for questioning, detectives said Echevarria admitted to getting into an argument with the victim and that he pointed the gun to his head in attempt to end his life.

That’s when they said the victim attempted to disarm Echevarria and that during the struggle to gain control of the victim, he struck her with the gun in her stomach and then shot her again.

Police said the gun was confiscated along with a shell casing and projectile.

Jail records show Echevarria is facing one count of second-degree attempted murder with a firearm.

As of Saturday, he is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Police have not said what initially caused the argument between the suspect and victim.
