PARKLAND, Fla. — While most teens are playing games or hanging out with friends, one Parkland eighth grader is hoping to inspire young people and create a worldwide movement.
Meet Abhay Agarwal.
“I like to do math. I play violin. I like to read also — for example, right now I’m reading ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’," Agarwal said.
You can now add “web designer” to that list.
“I created Kind Kingdom,” he said.
Kind Kingdom is an interactive website designed for children, using games to promote kindness, good manners and hygiene.
“I felt the value of kindness has decreased over time in young kids,” Agarwal said. “I created this platform to bring a resurgence, especially during a time of tension and conflict.”
“Throughout every magical adventure, Kind Kingdom sparks imagination while guiding children to grow with kindness, respect and positivity,” he said, reading a quote he wrote for the site.
The program is already up and running. Agarwal says he has been beta testing it with first- and fifth-grade students at North Broward Preparatory School.
“I’m gathering feedback and planning which type of audience I want to push this to,” he said.
Agarwal came up with the ambitious idea at just 13 years old and executed his vision in about six months — from building the website to writing the code himself.
“I can show you a snapshot of my code. This is how it sort of came out,” he said. “It was hard. It required a lot of thinking.”
It’s hard to believe this was his first time creating a website.
“I’m very happy he’s bringing something to the world where people can understand kindness is very important,” said his mother, Sarika Badgamia.
Agarwal says his inspiration came from home — values instilled by his parents. It’s not hard to see the inspiration while talking to him.
“You can start with a small action,” he said. “Every action can make a huge difference. Even just inviting someone to sit with you at lunch can change someone’s mood and day completely.”
It’s a lesson taught by a teen, carrying a message that is sometimes overlooked.
“If kindness existed, there would be no conflicts,” Agarwal said. “I want this to become sort of a global movement.”
Agarwal is also in the process of creating another website focused on promoting mathematics.
