FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Emergency room doctors expect to be busy over the next couple of days as people ring in the New Year with fireworks.
Doctors say the misuse of fireworks can lead to a wide range of injuries.
They say sparklers cause the most burn injuries, and it can happen quickly because of how hot they can get.
If you do have a fireworks mishap and suffer a severe burn, or if an explosion causes something worse, doctors say do not wait and get to the emergency room as quickly as possible.
“We have our fair share of amputations and blown-off fingers, which can change the lifestyle of the kid forever,” Dr. Francis Amador, the medical director of the Broward Health Pediatric Emergency Department, said.
Nearly 15,000 people were injured by fireworks in 2024, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission and 11 people were killed.
