South Florida braces for chilly temperatures as cold front arrives

South Florida braces for cold snap

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — You can feel the sudden chill in the air. South Florida is bringing out sweaters and jackets as temperatures dip into the 40s overnight.

Big crowds were seen along Las Olas Boulevard on Tuesday ahead of New Year’s Eve.

For people visiting from the Midwest, this cold snap is nothing.

“This is like September in Chicago. This is perfect,” one man said.

Meanwhile, the Salvation Army in Fort Lauderdale is opening its doors, offering more than 200 beds to give those in need a warm place to stay overnight.

“We’re so used to warm weather here in Broward County and in Florida,” said Lilly Gallardo, director of program services for the Salvation Army in Fort Lauderdale. “People who are experiencing homelessness may not have the adequate clothing as we may.”

“When they are on the street, and some of them may have health conditions, they may be more vulnerable to cold weather,” she added.

The Salvation Army expects to continue offering additional shelter on Wednesday night and possibly Thursday night.
