Venezuelan demonstrators rally for 2nd day, support U.S. action against Maduro

DORAL, Fla. — For a second day in a row, demonstrators gathered outside El Arepazo in Doral to show support for what they believe is action by the U.S. federal government against Venezuela’s long-time leader, Nicolás Maduro.

Protesters held signs written in Spanish, including one that read, “Venezuela is moving toward freedom,” as they chanted and waved flags in solidarity with opposition leaders.

Among those at the gathering was Maria Morin, campaign director for Vente USA, an organization affiliated with Venezuelan opposition party Vente Venezuela. The party is led by María Corina Machado, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee and prominent critic of the Maduro government.

Morin said demonstrators support actions taken by the Trump administration and believe Machado will eventually lead Venezuela toward democratic change.

“We were struggling so many years with these criminals,” Morin said. “We were able to prove that to the world thanks to her fight.”

She said the demonstrations are meant to show unity among Venezuelans calling for freedom.

“We’re raising our voices,” Morin said. “We’re demonstrating to the people that all Venezuelans stand together for liberty and for María Corina Machado.”

The gathering marked the second consecutive day of public demonstrations at the location, reflecting continued support among members of the Venezuelan diaspora for political change in their home country.
