ISLAMORADA, Fla. — Drivers from Massachusetts ― Boston in particular ― have a bit of an unsavory reputation. A 29-year-old man from Beantown may have lived up to it while driving through the Florida Keys on Tuesday morning.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, he flipped off a deputy while speeding through a school zone in a U-Haul box truck on U.S. 1, then wouldn’t pull over.
Idibek Jalilov, listed in jail records as an Army reservist, is now facing a felony fleeing and eluding charge.
MCSO spokesperson Adam Linhardt said Jalilov “displayed his middle finger” as he drove past deputies in a school zone at mile marker 90 ― near Plantation Key School and Coral Shores High School in Islamorada ― just after 7 a.m. Tuesday.
He was “subsequently observed impeding traffic, following too closely and speeding, among other violations,” Linhardt said, and wouldn’t stop for deputies who flipped on their lights and sirens until mile marker 85.
Linhardt said the Florida Highway Patrol assisted deputies, who took Jalilov to the nearby Plantation Key jail facility.
Records did not list a bond or an arraignment date.
