MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A man was arrested Tuesday, nearly six months after he allegedly shot another man at Greynolds Park in northeast Miami-Dade, authorities confirmed.
According to an arrest report from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred shortly before 7 p.m. on July 22, 2025, in a heavily wooded area of the park, located just north of North Miami Beach.
Deputies said the suspect, Kevin Jay Kertes, 29, of Sunny Isles Beach, shot the victim once in the back.
According to the arrest report, Kertes remained at the scene after the shooting and called 911.
The victim was transported to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital in critical condition, but later died from his injuries.
Kertes was transported to the MDSO Homicide Bureau the night of the shooting where he provided a statement to detectives. That statement was redacted from the publicly released arrest report.
Following months of investigating the shooting, Kertes was arrested Tuesday at the Winston Towers condominium building in Sunny Isles Beach where he lives.
He is charged with second-degree murder.
As of Wednesday morning, Kertes was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond.
A motive for the shooting has not been publicly released, however Kertes’ attorney, Robert Malove, told Local 10 in an email that his client is innocent and was just defending himself.
“Kevin Kertes is 100% innocent,” Malove said. “My client was out for a walk and was attacked by someone who thought he was an easy target.
“Mr. Kertes was entirely within his legal rights to defend himself and stand his ground.
“We eagerly look forward to clearing his good name and having him exonerated. Mr. Kertes should never have been arrested in the first place.”
Malove said he will be filing a motion Thursday for his client to be granted bond and released from jail as he awaits trial.
