Brown is asking a judge to dismiss a second-degree attempted murder charge in the case, with his attorney arguing that Brown acted in self-defense during the violent confrontation outside an underground boxing event.

The attorney’s motion is based on Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law. Brown’s attorney claims the man involved in the altercation, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, has a documented history of violence toward Brown and intended to attack him again during the incident on May 16, 2025.

Surveillance video obtained Thursday by Local 10 News shows the moments leading up to the shooting just before midnight.

In footage from a courtyard parking area around 11:55 p.m., Brown is seen punching a man, triggering a fight that draws in multiple people. The video shows the confrontation escalating into a three-on-one situation against the man before security intervenes. Brown can then be seen kicking a security guard as the scene is broken up.

Additional surveillance video from a nearby garage shows the man re-entering view moments later. Authorities allege that at this point Brown retrieved a gun from a vehicle parked nearby. As the man is pushed away from the area, Brown is seen jogging toward the corner, allegedly holding a firearm. At approximately 11:56 p.m., people in the video react as gunshots are heard.

Roughly a minute later, Brown is seen walking back into the area, followed by security guards with their weapons drawn. By 11:58 p.m., Brown is escorted out in handcuffs.

Police body camera footage from the scene shows officers telling Brown he was being detained, not arrested. In the video, Brown says he was injured after being pulled by security and insists he did nothing wrong.

Brown was not arrested the night of the incident because police said they were unable to locate a victim at the scene. An arrest warrant was issued the following month, in June, while Brown was in Dubai. U.S. Marshals later took him into custody overseas and returned him to Miami-Dade County.

He was released on bond from the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in mid-November, fitted with an ankle monitor, and ordered to have no contact with the man involved in the fight.

According to the arrest warrant, Nantambu told investigators that bullets allegedly fired by Brown grazed his neck. Brown’s attorney maintains Nantambu has a history of attacking Brown and posed an imminent threat during the May confrontation, forming the basis of the self-defense claim.

A judge has not yet ruled on the Stand Your Ground motion.
