PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — It is said death and destruction are never satisfied.

Sixteen years ago Monday, on Jan. 12, 2020, that was Haiti’s reality.

The destructive earthquake lasted just 38 seconds.

From the Caribbean country’s national symbol to neighborhoods, schools and government buildings, nearly everything was crushed, except for hope.

Local 10 News crews landed 48 hours after the disaster in Port au Prince.

Within hours, the world responded, along with the White House,

Miami-Dade County’s Elite Rescue Team sent crews, and they were needed, saving lives, but nearly anyone in a building at 4:53 p.m. when the quake hit, never made it out.

The government estimates 300,000 lives lost.

Overnight, a major hospital was made. The University of Miami’s Project Medishare joined with Haitian doctors in the critical first hours and days.

Local 10’s Calvin Hughes was there, and his full report marking the anniversary of the disaster can be seen at the top of this page.
