FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 17-year-old boy who was arrested over the weekend in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on New Year’s Eve in Fort Lauderdale appeared in juvenile court Monday.
Marquice Henry faces a murder charge in connection with the death of 17-year-old Joshua Gipson Jr.
On Monday, he was ordered to remain in juvenile detention for at least the next 21 days.
On Saturday, Gipson’s loved ones gathered at Right Way Ministries in Fort Lauderdale to say their final goodbyes to the teen who had a promising future in football, with plans to attend Virginia Tech next school year.
Sadly, his life would be cut short after police said he was caught in the crossfire of a shooting outside a CVS on Fort Lauderdale Beach on New Year’s Eve. Gipson was shot in the leg and the back. He died after being rushed to a local hospital.
On Sunday, Fort Lauderdale police announced they had arrested Henry as a suspect in the homicide.
On Monday, the state was discussing another unrelated case involving Henry, but his attorney has asked for a continuance on that.
Henry’s next court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
