MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — All Miami-Dade County public schools now have access to new, specialized healthcare services.

The goal behind expanding resources is to keep students healthy and in the classroom year-round.

Telehealth appointments with doctors are now happening right at school, next to the school nurse.

“We offer screenings, BMI’s, scoliosis, vision screening, BMI screening, management of chronic conditions -- asthma, diabetes, seizures,” teacher trainer Vanessa Robles said.

All 283 Miami-Dade County public schools now have access to these services, with mobile health units also making regular stops to provide more specialized care.

“Healthcare should be close to the community, trusted by the community and accessible to every family regardless of income or type of insurance,” said Ryan Hawkins, President and CEO of Jesse Tryce Community Health System.

The expansion was made possible through a partnership with community health providers, including the Children’s Trust, a local organization funded through property tax dollars.

About $25 million a year is being invested to make sure students get the care they need.

“For kids to be able to go in and access care, to walk into a clinic in school, to access care, first aid, routine medical services. Emergencies happen within school, they have a profound impact,” Jim Haj, the CEO and President of the Children’s Trust, said.

For parents, it also means less time away from work, with children getting care during the school day.

“Nowadays, mental health is a huge component to this, so we have the mental health support and we also have the mental health available after hours as well,” Haj said.

The change is also helping to reduce absenteeism in addition to helping students stay healthy all year round.
