STOCK ISLAND, Fla. — An Illinois lawyer spending time as a liveaboard in the Florida Keys is facing an animal cruelty charge after he was caught on camera abusing a dog, authorities said.
Deputies said the incident happened at the Stock Island Yacht Club & Marina off 6000 Peninsular Ave.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, witnesses reported that they saw Jack Edward Grewer, 54, “yank a 135-pound Great Dane on a choke chain collar backward with increasing force until he ultimately pulled with enough force to lift the dog up and backward, causing it to violently land on its back on a hard surface.”
MCSO spokesperson Adam Linhardt said that CCTV footage “corroborated witness testimony” and that SPCA investigators determined that “the incident constituted animal abuse.”
“The SPCA is investigating what injuries, if any, the dog suffered,” Linhardt said.
Linhardt said deputies obtained a warrant.
According to Grewer’s website, he is a registered nurse and a personal injury attorney who primarily practices law in the Chicago exurb of Yorkville, Illinois. He also has an office in Chicago itself.
He was no longer listed in MCSO jail records as of Friday.
