FLORIDA CITY, Fla. — Police on Thursday arrested three suspects who they say are accused of robbing University of Miami defensive back Bryce Fitzgerald during an armed home invasion while he attended an Airbnb party earlier this month in Florida City.
According to Florida City police, the robbery occurred shortly after midnight Jan. 10 at a rental home in the 500 block of Northwest Seventh Street, where Fitzgerald had gone to attend a birthday party.
Fitzgerald told investigators he was invited to the gathering by a friend and arrived at the location wearing two bracelets and a necklace.
Police said Fitzgerald entered the home, greeted several people — many of whom he recognized from playing football — and spent time socializing. At one point during the evening, he left the Airbnb with friends to get food before returning.
A short time later, Fitzgerald told police he was sitting inside the living room when the lights suddenly went out.
Moments afterward, three masked men dressed in black entered through the front door and rushed directly toward him, demanding his chain, according to an arrest report.
Police said one of the suspects pulled a rifle from his waistband, pressed it to Fitzgerald’s head and repeatedly struck him in the leg with the butt of the weapon.
They said the suspect then reached into Fitzgerald’s jacket pocket and removed his necklace. Investigators said the suspects also took Fitzgerald’s bracelets, with the stolen jewelry valued at approximately $53,000.
Fitzgerald told police that he fled through a sliding glass door and jumped a wooden fence behind the property to escape.
Investigators later interviewed a witness who said one of the suspects was known by the nickname “Rello” and was seen meeting with others at the property before the robbery.
The witness told police the group appeared to coordinate entry into the residence and was later seen fleeing together after the robbery.
Detectives later identified “Rello” as Terrell Jermaine Lipscomb Jr. after a witness identified him from a photograph as one of the men who entered the Airbnb during the robbery.
Detectives on Wednesday contacted Lipscomb’s mother, who later arranged for him to come to the Florida City Police Department.
Authorities said Lipscomb, 19, was advised of his rights, denied involvement in the robbery, and later requested an attorney, at which point questioning stopped.
Police identified his two accomplices in an arrest report as Rashiem Damadre Lipscomb, 20, and Javarius Lamar Wright Jr.,17. Their charges weren’t immediately known.
Before invoking his right to an attorney, Lipscomb told detectives his nickname was “Rello,” police said.
Jail records show he is facing one count of robbery with home invasion.
Lipscomb appeared before a judge on Thursday afternoon. He is being held without bond and was ordered to stay away from Fitzgerald.
Jail records did not yet list the three suspects as inmates as of publication.
