KENDALL, Fla. — A mother was arrested Wednesday at Miami Killian Senior High School after causing a disturbance while trying to register her child, authorities said.
According to an arrest report from Miami-Dade Schools Police, the incident occurred at about 11 a.m. Wednesday at the school, located at 10655 SW 97th Ave. in Kendall.
Police said Laura Elena Hernandez, 43, of North Fort Myers, became “irate” when meeting with the school’s principal, Earl Burth, “screaming and misusing her cellphone to dial 911 multiple times because she was in fear for her safety.”
The arrest report does not detail what led to Hernandez’s alleged outburst or why she claimed to be in fear for her safety.
According to the report, Hernandez called the school resource officer a “fake cop,” and Burth told her that she needed to leave the school campus as she had “no legitimate business being at the school.”
Police said Hernandez continued to scream and refused to leave.
The school resource officer also told Hernandez that she needed to leave and tried to escort her out, but she pulled away, dropped all of her body weight to the floor and continued screaming “help!” the report stated.
According to the report, Hernandez tucked her hands underneath her body, preventing officers from placing her into handcuffs.
Police said backup units were called to the school and Hernandez was eventually arrested with assistance from two officers.
According to the report, four main hallways were blocked off to students during the incident.
Hernandez faces multiple charges, including resisting an officer with violence, misuse of 911 emergency communications, trespassing on school grounds after a warning and interference with an educational institution.
As of Thursday morning, she was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $3,650 bond.
