MIAMI — Family, friends and fellow firefighters gathered Sunday to honor Miami-Dade Fire Rescue firefighter Andrew Brandon, remembering his service and the impact he had on those around him.
A procession formed outside as Brandon’s casket was brought inside, marking a celebration of life filled with emotion and remembrance.
“He made the whole crew better,” a colleague said. “He wasn’t just a good firefighter — he was a good man.”
Brandon died by suicide last week, according to the department.
His death has renewed concerns about the mental health challenges first responders face after repeated exposure to traumatic situations. The National Institutes of Health says PTSD is particularly common among first responders and military members.
Brandon is the third Miami-Dade firefighter to die by suicide in the past two years, following Capt. Bill Gustin in March 2024 and Lt. Alexander Acosta the summer before.
Fire union leaders say more firefighters are reaching out for help and are urging local governments to invest more in mental health resources for first responders.
If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available by calling or texting 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
