MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Local 10 is highlighting local talents across South Florida, and one of them is a growing superstar in the world of music.
That up-and-coming hip hop artist is Oya Baby.
Growing up in the Miami Gardens neighborhood of Carol City, the South Florida star says she was influenced by her family and Cuban background.
“I come from Cuban immigrants, my mom and my entire family,” she said. “My grandparents, they came here from Cuba. My mom was only seven years old, we moved to Carol City.”
And she’s not new to the industry. You may have seen her alongside a fellow-Miami artist and hip-hop hitmaker Flo Rida.
Before stepping into the solo artist spotlight, Oya Baby joined Flo Rida on tour as one of his back-up dancers.
“He would always play around with me and be like, oh I’m gonna make you an artist because I’ve always liked to like sing and rap around him, like just as family would, just you know random things, having fun and he was like I’m gonna take you behind to the studio so I’m like oh god and it actually happened,” she said.
Now signed to his record label, Strong Arm Records, Oya Baby is paving her own path as a triple threat entertainer.
“I’ve danced for many Miami artists, but he was like the one that just took me you know to the next level especially internationally,” she said. “I’ve been to countries and cities I can’t even pronounce thanks to him.”
She’s currently working on her first EP.
“Just different, afro Latina vibes,” she said. “It’s been a few years in the process.”
