HOMESTEAD, Fla. — A Homestead Army veteran and his family received an unexpected life-changing surprise when Action Roofing and the Miami Dolphins stepped in to replace their failing roof at no cost.
On Jan. 23, Miami Dolphins alumni Troy Drayton, along with team cheerleaders and staff, surprised Homestead resident Alex Silva Jr. and his family with the announcement of a free roof valued at $35,000.
Silva, a disabled Army veteran, was nominated by the Wounded Warrior Project, a partner of the team, and was able to choose the roof color before work began.
Silva, who served six years in the Army, lives with his wife and children and suffers from Common Variable Immunodeficiency, a condition that requires biweekly in-home plasma treatments.
Ongoing roof leaks had created unsafe living conditions that were negatively impacting on his health, making the roof replacement especially critical.
Action Roofing will cover all labor and materials, including removing the damaged roof, repairing affected areas, and installing a new, durable roofing system built to handle Florida’s harsh weather, according to a news release obtained by Local 10 News on Tuesday.
Despite his health challenges, the news release stated that Silva remains actively involved in helping fellow veterans alongside his father, a former Marine.
