MIAMI — A 27-year-old man was arrested Tuesday, weeks after he was involved in a fatal car crash in Miami involving a scooter rider.
According to an arrest report from the Miami Police Department, the crash occurred the night of Dec. 30, 2025, and the victim died at Jackson Memorial Hospital on Jan. 7.
The report states that the suspect, Javier Sanjay-Tzay, of Miami, was driving a rented blue Hyundai Tucson when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Southwest 14th Avenue and Sixth Street before hitting the victim who was on a standup electric scooter.
Police said Sanjay-Tzay then fled the scene without rending aid to the victim.
According to the report, the victim was transported to JMH’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition, where it was discovered that he suffered a traumatic brain injury, several fractured ribs and a liver injury.
The victim was intubated and later died at the hospital on Jan. 7.
Police said Sanjay-Tzay was located the day after the crash, driving the wrong way on Southwest Seventh Street, approaching 17th Avenue.
A sergeant pulled him over and noticed that the vehicle had front-end damage with the front left quarter panel missing and a damaged windshield, consistent with a crash involving a pedestrian.
According to the report, Sanjay-Tzay, who was identified by his Guatemalan passport, was transported to the Miami Police Department to be interviewed and admitted to being behind the wheel of the SUV when it collided with the victim the previous night.
Police said he responded to the police station again on Tuesday, at which time he was taken into custody.
Sanjay-Tzay faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in a death and driving without a valid license, causing a death.
As of Wednesday morning, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Online jail records listed his bond as “to be set.”
