MIRAMAR, Fla. — A driver made it out of the water OK after crashing his or her vehicle into a canal in Miramar early Thursday morning, authorities confirmed.
According to Miramar police, the driver, whose identity has not yet been released, was traveling at a high rate of speed along Fairway Boulevard just before 3 a.m. when the car crashed and then went into a canal.
Police said the driver exited the water near Utopia Drive and walked toward University Drive, where officers made contact with the driver.
According to police, the driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital to be treated.
Miramar Fire Rescue divers checked the vehicle for additional occupants and confirmed none were found inside.
Police said the Broward Sheriff’s Office Aviation unit assisted with checking the waterway and surrounding area.
A tow truck eventually removed the vehicle from the canal.
Police said Utopia Drive was temporarily closed after the incident, but has since reopened.
