HIALEAH, Fla. — Police say a Hialeah man ambushed his ex-girlfriend with a bat Thursday afternoon, striking her multiple times and taking her phone and purse, just days after their relationship ended.
Hialeah police identified the suspect in an arrest report as 35-year-old Alberto Turino Hernandez.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m. near the 5100 block of West 12th Avenue.
Hernandez and the victim had been in a relationship for about six months and lived together for the last two months. However, the report stated that their relationship ended on Tuesday, and Hernandez moved out.
Police said the victim told officers Hernandez arrived in a black vehicle, exited, and ambushed her behind her home.
They said the victim told them Hernandez had a black bat in his hands and yelled in Spanish,“You will not make fun of me,” before striking her in the leg.
The victim said Hernandez tried to force her into his vehicle, but she resisted, according to the report.
Police said he then struck again on her back and right leg, causing a cut, then grabbed her phone and purse before fleeing.
They said Hialeah Fire Rescue took the victim to Palmetto General Hospital for treatment.
Detectives later obtained Hernandez’s location and arrested him around 5:30 p.m. inside a box truck near Northwest 87th Avenue and Northwest 72th Street, authorities said.
While being interviewed at the HPD headquarters, Hernandez told detectives he arrived at the scene in a gray Toyota, saw the victim walking, and exited the vehicle with a wooden stick.
Police said Hernandez admitted telling the victim, “You took everything from me,” before striking her about three times and tried to force her into his vehicle.
Hernandez told police he then grabbed the victim’s phone and purse to prevent her from calling 911. He also acknowledged striking her on the back while she was on the ground and taking her belongings, the report stated.
Jail records show he is facing one count each of armed robbery with a weapon, attempted kidnapping, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and tampering with a witness or victim.
Hernandez was being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Friday afternoon.
