MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Dozens of people gathered Saturday morning in Miami Gardens to honor the life of Trayvon Martin, coming together for the city’s annual peace walk held in his memory and calling for unity, justice and an end to gun violence.

The one-mile walk began at Walt Frazier Park about half an hour earlier and marks the 14th year the event has been held.

While the walk centers on remembering Martin — whose 2012 shooting death sparked a national conversation about racial justice — organizers and participants say it is also about reflection and action.

Families, community leaders and activists filled the streets, walking together in solidarity. Many carried signs, wore hoodies and shared messages of peace as they moved through the neighborhood.

Participants said the walk is meant to keep Martin’s legacy alive while also pushing for safer communities and accountability.

Trayvon’s father, Tracy Martin, joined the walk again this year. Fourteen years after his son’s death, he continues to call for change, emphasizing action as well as words.

“It’s just a testament of how we’ve been intricate in the community, how we’ve been consistent with the things we’ve been doing, and it’s just a blessing to see people come out and support the foundation, our cause and what we’ve been doing,” he said.

Organizers said one of the main goals of the walk is to continue educating younger generations and to promote peace long after the event ends.

After leaving Walt Frazier Park, the group is walking one mile to the Betty T. Ferguson Recreation Center, where vendors, food trucks, DJs and motivational speakers are scheduled to take part in the event.

The peace walk comes just days before what would have been Trayvon Martin’s 31st birthday on Feb. 5.
