Off-duty corrections officer involved in shooting in southwest Miami-Dade

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A shooting investigation is underway after gunfire erupted during a confrontation early Saturday morning in southwest Miami-Dade, authorities said.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office responded around 6:50 a.m. to reports of a shooting near Southwest 112th Avenue and 170th Terrace.

Deputies said they found a man at the scene who was not injured and determined that a non-contact shooting had occurred.

They said the man, an off-duty Florida Department of Corrections officer, was jogging with a woman when an unknown person in an unknown vehicle approached them. A dispute involving the woman followed and escalated into a verbal altercation.

Authorities said the suspect then produced a firearm and fired at the off-duty officer, who returned fire. The culprit immediately fled the area.

No other details about the shooting were immediately released.
