TAMARAC, Fla. — A 42-year-old man was arrested last week by the Broward Sheriff’s Office after he entered another man’s vehicle at a 7-Eleven gas station and then forced him to drive him around and withdraw money from an ATM, authorities said.
According to the suspect’s arrest report, the incident was reported shortly after 8 a.m. Friday at the 7-Eleven at 7901 W. Commercial Blvd.
Deputies said the suspect, Kenneth Cole Harp, of Tamarac, entered the victim’s vehicle as the man was sitting in the driver’s seat and ordered the victim to drive him to another location.
According to the report, Harp also ordered the victim to hand over his cellphone and then had the man’s friend send $500 to the victim via Zelle.
After the transaction, Harp forced the victim to drive to an ATM so he could withdraw the money, authorities said.
The victim reported the incident to law enforcement and identified Harp in a photo lineup.
According to the report, Harp was located later that day in Hollywood and was taken into custody.
Deputies said he admitted to some of the victim’s statements, but claimed the carjacking was really a “voluntary paid ride” and denied that the victim ever told him to exit the vehicle.
He said it was possible the victim was scared, however, because he “jumped in the car” and told the victim he was “in trouble,” the arrest report stated.
Harp was arrested on charges of kidnapping, robbery/carjacking and fraudulent use or possession of another’s ID without consent.
As of Tuesday morning, Harp was being held at the Broward County Main Jail without bond.
