MIAMI — A gastrointestinal outbreak affected passengers and crew aboard the Regent Seven Seas Mariner during its voyage from Miami to Honolulu, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Wednesday.
The cruise, which sailed Jan. 11–Feb. 1, had 631 passengers and 458 crew members onboard.
According to CDC data, 21 passengers (3.3%) and 6 crew members (1.3%) reported illness during the voyage. The predominant symptom was diarrhea, and the causative agent has not been identified.
In response, Regent Seven Seas and the ship’s crew increased cleaning and disinfection, isolated ill passengers and crew, collected stool specimens for testing, and consulted with the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program about sanitation and reporting procedures.
Officials said the VSP monitored the situation remotely.
Records show the ship’s voyage included stops in Cartagena, Panama Canal, Puntarenas, Puerto Quetzal, Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas, Hilo, Kahului, and Honolulu. The outbreak was reported to VSP on Jan. 29.
