Fort Lauderdale tightens alcohol restrictions to improve safety

New alcohol rules take effect in Fort Lauderdale nightlife areas

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Fort Lauderdale’s busy entertainment districts are about to look a little different as tighter alcohol rules take effect.

“This area right here specifically is very fun. It’s all crowded, everyone is having a great time,” said visitor Kyle Fraynd.

Earlier this week, the Fort Lauderdale City Commission unanimously voted to ban drinking from open containers on the street and to prohibit outdoor alcohol sales in the city’s special entertainment districts, including Beach Place and the popular Himmarshee Village area.

“I support not having an open container policy,” said Chris Comprosky.

“Keep the alcohol in the clubs. I agree,” Fraynd added.

City leaders said the decision follows two separate shootings in December that left one teenager dead and at least five others injured.

“It’s keeping the area more safe. Keep your alcohol inside, keep the streets safe,” said Serena, who was in the area.

The city said business owners and residents supported the ordinance, though not everyone realized the rules had already changed.

Others oppose the move, arguing it unfairly impacts responsible visitors and businesses.

City leaders said the goal is to reduce violence and improve public safety without shutting down nightlife.
