HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — A Hollywood neighborhood battle over a proposed religious bathhouse is continuing to play out on Tuesday.
In a 4-2 vote, Hollywood’s Historic Preservation Board approved a special exception to demolish the existing home and build the new structure at 1434 Monroe St.
Terms of the approval included that the facility is to only be used for females, the structure shall have no vertical or horizontal expansion, one floor only, appointments can start at 6:30 p.m. and be no later than 10:30 p.m. for last appointment with no more than eight appointments a day. The facility will also be limited to five parking spaces.
Last year, architects and the applicant were told to go back to the drawing board because city leaders and neighbors said the Jewish ritual bathhouse meant for women - known as a Mikvah — did not fit the residential neighborhood it was seeking to open within.
The property on Monroe Street in Hollywood Lakes is zoned as a single-family property, but its new owners are trying to get a special religious exception.
After the last meeting, the owners adopted a mid-century architectural design with more greenery to match the neighborhood.
The architect has also removed a vehicular access along Monroe Street, with all traffic and parking relocated to the back alley.
Neighbors are still concerned about the traffic trouble, design, and zoning.
