MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A Miami-Dade senior is accused of fleeing the scene after a hit-and-run last month that authorities said seriously injured a 7-year-old boy in the county’s Westchester neighborhood.

The crash happened around noon on Jan. 10 near the 8200 block of Southwest 32nd Street.

According to an arrest report from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the boy was riding an electric scooter on the sidewalk under his mother’s supervision and was attempting to cross Southwest 32nd Street when he was struck by a silver Toyota Camry traveling westbound.

Investigators said the driver, who deputies identified as Karina Pubchara Martinez, 82, failed to stop, fled the scene, and did not render aid or provide any information.

Deputies who arrived at the scene said they found the boy “lying injured in a county swale and unable to move.”

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported the child to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, where medical records showed that he suffered serious injuries, including an “acute head injury, a brain lesion, a broken femur, and a closed displaced subtrochanteric fracture of the right femur, along with bruising and minor lacerations,” the report stated.

Deputies recovered multiple pieces of plastic debris from the roadway that were later identified as front bumper components from a 2009–2011 Toyota Camry.

Investigators said surveillance video from nearby homes showed a silver Camry with apparent front-end damage traveling westbound immediately after the collision.

They later located a silver Toyota Camry parked at a residence in Miami with front-end damage consistent with the crash, including a dented hood and missing bumper components that matched debris recovered at the scene, authorities said.

Deputies confirmed that the car was registered to Pubchara Martinez.

Investigators said data from the senior’s cellphone placed her at the location of the crash at the time it occurred and showed that she continued westbound without stopping.

They said the data was consistent with surveillance video showing the car leaving and returning to her home, occupied by a single individual.

On Wednesday, deputies said Pubchara Martinez voluntarily surrendered at MDSO headquarters and invoked her right to remain silent.

Jail records show she is facing one count of leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury.

As of Tuesday, she was being held on a $7,500 bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. She was also banned from driving a motor vehicle.
