WESTON, Fla. — Two drivers were killed in a wrong-way crash on northbound U.S. 27 near mile marker 37 in western Broward County early Wednesday, authorities said.
Florida Highway Patrol officials said the crash involved a white 2013 Nissan Altima and a white Land Rover Discovery.
They said the Altima, driven by a 24-year-old Hispanic woman from Palmetto, Florida, was traveling south in the inside northbound lane. The Land Rover, driven by a man whose identity has not been released, was traveling north in the same lane.
Investigators said “on approach to the wrong-way vehicle, the Land Rover driver could not take evasive action,” which caused the front ends of both vehicles to collide and then rotate.
They said the Altima then came to rest straddling the white line between the inside and outside lanes, facing northwest. The Land Rover came to rest straddling the yellow edge line on the inside shoulder, facing northeast, and caught fire.
Authorities said both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene by BSO Weston Fire Rescue. The next of kin for both victims had not been notified.
Northbound U.S. 27 was closed for several hours and reopened at 6:58 a.m.
No other details about the crash were immediately released.
