MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Two Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies happened to come upon an animal attack in the rural Redland area on Monday afternoon and ended up shooting and killing two “large and vicious” dogs mauling a man, authorities said.
The series of events happened just before 3 p.m. in the 16100 block of Southwest 172nd Avenue.
MDSO Detective Samantha Choon said that deputies were in the area for an unrelated investigation when they heard a commotion ― “what sounded like a person in distress” ― and saw the dogs attacking a man in a backyard.
Authorities said the deputies used a Taser on the dogs, initially stopping the attack. According to MDSO, when the dogs began attacking the man again, they opened fire, killing both canines.
“They acted swiftly,” Choon, an agency spokesperson, said.
Video from Sky 10 showed the two dead dogs in the backyard and a man being loaded onto a stretcher and into a medical helicopter. He appeared to be alert and had a bandage around his left hand.
Authorities said the man was stable and expected to be OK.
The shooting will be investigated internally, officials said.
