FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A good Samaritan who rescued a lost dog off Interstate 95 is now in the process of reuniting him with his owner.
Brian Filous didn’t have a doubt in his mind that he had to rescue the lost dog named Duke when he saw it running around during a big traffic jam on Sunday afternoon.
“I’m a dog person,” he said. “I think anybody that owns dogs would’ve (done this).”
The traffic was due to a crash that happened in the southbound express lanes of I-95 just south of Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.
Three people were injured in the crash, one with life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.
Filous brought Duke right into his truck and to his Lighthouse Point home.
“I didn’t think much of it, traffic wasn’t moving fast, and I thought, I’ve got one chance to help this guy out,” he said.
Duke did not have a nametag and was not microchipped.
On Monday, Filous learned Duke belongs to one of the drivers in the crash, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
“It’s absolutely remarkable that he’s OK,” he said.
Filous said he plans to bring Duke to the veteran’s caretaker later this week.
“The dog will be taken care of and he’s going back to a good home that he’s familiar with,” he said. “We just wish the best recovery for the gentleman involved.”
