FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Surveillance videos show law enforcement during a chase that ended with a fatal crash in Broward County. A witness’s video later shows when crews pulled the stolen van involved out of the water.
A woman died, and a man was injured after the stolen van ended up in a waterway during a police chase on Sunday night in Fort Lauderdale.
Michael Malik Harvey, the driver of the van, crashed through a gate at the Yacht Haven Park & Marina at 2323 West State Road 84, according to police.
“All of a sudden ‘BOOM!’ Right through the gate, blew it to pieces,” Liam Lenihan told Local 10 News on Sunday night.
The van had been reported stolen in Miami-Dade County, and Harvey was driving it recklessly at about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday in West Park, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Harvey struck a BSO squad car with the van, and a police chase started along West Hallandale Beach Boulevard, according to BSO.
A witness at the Yacht Haven Park & Marina said he saw the van pass between two marina pilings and plow into the waterway that connects to the South Fork New River.
“They drove into the back, drove into the water, the guy got rescued out of the car, and they started CPR on him,” Lenihan said. “And then the girl, she didn’t get pulled out until 15 to 20 minutes later.”
Aninta Taylor said she saw rescuers pull the woman out of the water.
“It was kind of disturbing,” Taylor said.
Fire rescue personnel took the two to Broward Health Medical Center. Police officers have yet to release the identity of the woman who was pronounced dead at the medical center.
