Miami-Dade father who killed son: 'I have to live with this, judge'

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — David Contreras, the father who confessed to fatally shooting his 21-year-old son in Kendall, appeared in court on Monday morning in Miami-Dade County.

As part of a plea deal, Contreras, 54, pleaded guilty to a first-degree felony charge of manslaughter with a deadly weapon.

Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge David H. Young granted a stay until March 30, 2039, and sentenced him to probation until March 30, 2048.

“I have to live with that, judge,” Contreras told Young, who later closed the case.

Contreras called 911 to report that he had shot his son on Nov. 3, 2023, at his home, at 10703 SW 84th Ave., in Kendall, records showed.

“The brothers of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Florida Nu Chapter at Florida International University are heartbroken to have learned this morning of the loss of one our own,” an FIU student wrote about Eric Contreras.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested David Contreras on Nov. 3, 2023, and corrections booked him on Nov. 4, 2023, according to court and inmate records.

A bond court judge denied Contreras bail when he faced a charge of second-degree murder with a deadly weapon, records showed.

Before the plea deal closed the case, Young had ordered house arrest.

This is a developing story.
