Police: Jorge Diaz accused of stealing from Baptist Health Orthopedics

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY CRIME: Jorge Diaz surrendered to police on Thursday in South Miami after he was accused of stealing from his employer.

SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. — A 21-year-old man faced charges on Thursday afternoon in Miami-Dade County over accusations that he had stolen from his employer in South Miami.

Miami-Dade corrections booked Jorge Diaz shortly before 9 a.m. on Thursday at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, according to inmate records.

Diaz, of West Park, had surrendered at 7:10 a.m. on Thursday at the South Miami Police Department, according to a police officer’s arrest report.

Baptist Health Orthopedics, Diaz’s employer, terminated his job at 6200 SW 72 St., Suite. 602, in South Miami on March 26, according to the police report.

Diaz’s supervisor told police officers that on March 19, she “noticed an unusual increase” in Diaz’s orders in the “other supplies” category, according to the report.

The supervisor was “unable to justify” about $5,987 in supplies that Diaz had ordered, and she notified human resources, according to police.

During his employer’s investigation, surveillance video showed Diaz on March 5 “exiting a room carrying several boxes that he had ordered without authorization,” and there were problematic orders from Feb. 2 to Feb 26, according to police.

Diaz “willfully and knowingly accessed computer resources from employment computer with the intent to defraud and obtain property,” a police officer wrote, according to an arrest report.

Diaz faced charges of organized fraud of $20,000 or less and offenses against computer users. His bond is $5,000.
