The Florida Forest Service’s Everglades field unit continued fighting an active wildfire on Monday in deep southern Miami-Dade County.
The fire in the area of Florida City was 30% contained after burning about 300 acres, according to the Florida Forest Service.
Miami-Dade firefighters responded to the area of Southwest 344 Street and South Dixie Highway.
“We are working on protecting the communities around Florida City and Homestead, and also making sure that roads stay open,” M-DFR Chief Ralph Baena said.
The smoke from the fire affected air quality and drivers’ visibility. Drivers from Florida City to the Florida Keys experienced road closures on Sunday.
M-DFR personnel warned people with respiratory conditions to keep their windows and doors closed and set their air conditioning systems to recirculate.
The fire “danger” was moderate and the “potential” high on Monday in Miami-Dade, according to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ fire danger index report.
