MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Miami-Dade homicide detectives are investigating the death of Edwin Fernandez, a Doral Police Department school resource officer, found dead in a patrol car on Wednesday morning in Redland, according to sources familiar with the case.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel responded shortly after 6:20 a.m. on Wednesday to the area of Southwest 157th Avenue and 160 Street, also known as Colonial Drive.

A marked Doral Police Department Ford Police Interceptor Utility patrol vehicle was parked on a gravel road between farms in Redland, near the Richmond West neighborhood.

“Detectives can confirm that there is no foul play suspected,” Detective Daniel D. Castillo, a spokesman for MDSO, wrote in a statement.

A group of motormen escorted a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue freightliner ambulance through the Richmond Heights-Redland area.

The convoy traveled northbound on the Florida Turnpike and the Palmetto Expressway, and eastbound on the Dolphin Expressway.

A large U.S. flag was flying from a fire truck’s elevated ladder over Northwest 10th Avenue, near 20th Street in Allapattah.

Dozens of police officers lined the path. Some were standing at attention to salute as the ambulance passed.

A U.S. flag was draped over the police officer’s body upon arrival at the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava released a statement on Wednesday evening reacting to the news of the officer’s death.

“Our hearts are heavy today as we mourn the loss of a member of the City of Doral Police Department. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and every member of the Doral Police family during this incredibly difficult time,” Levine Cava wrote. “We stand with our law enforcement community.”
