Red Cross: Fire affects 35 after damaging 18 apartments in Miami

MIAMI — A fire damaged a three-story apartment building on Wednesday in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood, causing residents and their pets to be homeless.

A group of 35 adults needed help after 18 apartments suffered damage along West Flagler Street, according to a statement by the American Red Cross on Thursday.

Firefighters responded to the building at about 3:25 p.m. on Wednesday, near Southwest 21st Avenue, according to Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Pete Sanchez.

“Firefighters quickly stretched hose lines and began an aggressive interior fire attack while crews conducted searches of all three floors,” Sanchez wrote in a statement. “All areas were searched and determined to be clear. The fire was rapidly spreading through the crawl spaces, walls, and attic areas of the building.”

Firefighters used thermal imaging cameras and a drone to find hidden hotspots, the department’s Ambu Bus provided temporary shelter, and no one was injured, according to Sanchez.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
