FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A man remained hospitalized on Tuesday, as detectives investigated suspicions that the fire that trapped him in his home in Fort Lauderdale was set on purpose, police said.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue personnel responded to the one-story house shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Monday after a neighbor saw the flames in the Lauderdale Manors neighborhood.

Firefighters reported finding the man trapped inside the bathroom in the five-bedroom house, built in 1958, near Northwest 18th Avenue and 16th Court.

Fire rescue personnel reported taking the man, who suffered life-threatening injuries, to the Broward Health Medical Center. A firefighter suffered minor burns while working at the house.
