MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Surveillance video shows a man who was a patient at Jackson Memorial Hospital attacking two women who were working on May 30 in the emergency room.
Attorney Michael Pizzi, who represents one of the women, said JMH executives didn’t release the surveillance video until a Miami-Dade judge issued an order.
“If Jackson was successful and had their way, no one in the public would have ever seen the video,” Pizzi said on Wednesday.
Wenyou Rubin, the patient, attacked Tisa Wolf, a patient finance staffer, and Yanira Eguileor, a registered nurse, and both JMH and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office failed them, according to Pizzi.
“He was allowed to virtually roam free, almost unescorted and assault nurses,” said Pizzi, who represents Eguileor.
The video shows other healthcare workers rushing to intervene after Rubin punched Eguileor three times before she fell.
“He could have killed somebody,” Pizzi said about Rubin, 44, who has criminal cases pending.
Court records show Rubin has two felony cases pending in Miami-Dade County.
Prosecutors filed the cases on Oct. 5, 2024, and on June 8, and Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Alberto Milian was presiding over both.
In the 2024 case, Rubin faced a charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. In the recent case, Rubin faced two counts of battery against an emergency medical care provider and misdemeanor battery.
Records show he was “found incompetent” in both cases.
In civil court, Eguileor is seeking $5 million in damages from JMH and MDSO. Pizzi said more needs to be done to protect JMH employees.
A spokesperson for JMH released a statement: “Within seconds, the first Jackson Public Safety Officer arrived at the scene, with additional public safety officers responding soon after. The employees involved were immediately offered support and care following the incident.”
