HIALEAH, Fla. – Three highways, three districts.
They actually are hard to miss in a rotation with other digital billboards.
Words like “traitors” and “sell-outs” are targeting three South Florida Cuban-American Republicans in Congress: Maria Elvira Salazar, Carlos Gimenez and Mario Diaz-Balart.
All three were elected in immigrant-rich districts and all three are all-in supporters of President Donald Trump.
They are now all maneuvering their work for compassionate immigration reform with their political defense of a hard-liner.
“I find that billboard inflammatory, but the world we live in now ― it’s there to get attention," constituent Noel Cleland said.
Some of the billboards also feature another prominent Cuban-American Republican: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, formerly one of Florida’s senators.
“I think the billboards are a direct response to the current political climate,” constituent Jessica Perez said. “One that’s very angry.”
There is more ― a whole digital campaign ― by a group called “Keep Them Honest,” a two-week-old not-for-profit whose principals are local Democrats.
Its financial sources do not have to be made public.
“I think the (members of Congress) need to speak up,” constituent Valerie Howell said. “I think they need to get the courage not to be cowed by Trump.”
None of the lawmakers have specifically commented on the billboards.
More are scheduled to go up.
