BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — Five candidates will be asking Democrats for their vote Tuesday as they aim to go head-to-head with a Republican challenger in November in one of this election season’s most-watched races: Florida’s newly redrawn Congressional District 20.
Four Republicans are seeking the nomination in the deep-blue district.
Democratic candidates include rap music executive and free speech activist Luther Campbell, former Broward mayor and commissioner Dale Holness, community organizer Elijah Manley and U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who is changing districts after the redraw.
And then there is the embattled incumbent seeking to make a comeback — former U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick— who resigned ahead of a House Ethics Committee expulsion threat in the wake of her indictment, accused of stealing federal funds. She denies wrongdoing.
On the Republican side: Brent Andersen is a Pompano Beach resident and businessman fighting for lower costs and economic opportunity for District 20 families. Lateresa “La” Jones is the founder of “Grandmas for the Generations” — a grassroots organization helping families defend children. Dr. Rod Joseph is a U.S. Army combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient with 20 years served in the military. Carla Spalding is a U.S. Navy veteran who also has longtime experience in nursing.
