Cuba-American retired journalists to face off in Florida’s 27th Congressional District midterm election

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. — Cuban-American retired broadcast journalists U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar and Eliott Rodriguez are facing off in the midterm election for Florida’s 27th Congressional District.

Salazar, 64, the incumbent, won the Republican primary on Tuesday with 81% of the votes. V. Michael Arias, a Coral Gables-based attorney, lost with 19% of the votes.

According to the U.S. Federal Election Commission’s reports on campaign contributions, Salazar’s total receipts were more than $1.99 million, her total disbursements were more than $1.15 million, and her cash on hand was over $2.25 million.

Rodriguez, 69, won the Democratic primary with 54% of the votes. Robin Peguero, a former federal prosecutor, lost with 46% of the votes.

According to FEC reports on campaign contributions, Rodriguez’s total receipts were more than $661,170, his total disbursements were more than $336,000, and his cash on hand was more than $325,000.

The U.S. Census reported in 2024 that the district is home to about 788,713 people. It covers about 119 square miles in Miami-Dade County, according to the Census Reporter.

The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 5th. The deadline to request a vote-by-mail ballot is Oct. 22nd. Early voting is from Oct. 24th to 31st. The midterm election is on Nov. 3rd.
